In the US, general elections land on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even years. 🗳️ Congress fixed that rule in 1845, back when people travelled to vote by horse and needed a day that avoided both the Sabbath and market day.
The rule gives exactly seven possible dates, November 2 through November 8. Registration deadlines come weeks earlier, so this is really two countdowns wearing one coat.
- Presidential elections fall every four years; the midterms sit halfway between them.
- Early voting and mail ballots open well before election day in most states, with deadlines that vary a lot.
