July 4 marks the day the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1776. 🎆 The vote for independence actually happened two days earlier, on July 2, and John Adams was convinced that was the date people would celebrate. He was wrong by 48 hours.
Fireworks travel about a mile a minute as sound, so if you count five seconds between the flash and the bang, the shell burst roughly a mile away.
| Date in 1776 | What happened |
|---|---|
| July 2 | Congress voted for independence |
| July 4 | The wording of the Declaration was adopted |
| July 8 | First public readings in Philadelphia |
| August 2 | Most delegates actually signed |
The 4th is the date printed on the Declaration, so that is the one that stuck.
