About this countdown

🎆

July 4: grills, fireworks, and at least one uncle giving a speech nobody asked for. Count on it.

July 4 marks the day the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1776. 🎆 The vote for independence actually happened two days earlier, on July 2, and John Adams was convinced that was the date people would celebrate. He was wrong by 48 hours.

Fireworks travel about a mile a minute as sound, so if you count five seconds between the flash and the bang, the shell burst roughly a mile away.

  • Most public displays start at dusk, which in early July is later than people expect.
  • The date is fixed, so if the 4th lands midweek the parades often move to the nearest weekend.
  • Set a target time if you want the counter to hit zero when the first shell goes up. 🇺🇸

Questions people ask

Why July 4 and not July 2?

The 4th is the date printed on the Declaration, so that is the one that stuck.
