There are two answers to when summer starts, and they are three weeks apart. ☀️ Meteorologists use June 1 because it makes the seasons tidy three month blocks. Astronomers use the solstice, around June 20 or 21. This page counts to the solstice.
The solstice is the longest day of the year in the northern half of the world. After that the light starts going back the other way, one minute at a time, like a tide turning while nobody is watching.
| Event | Roughly when |
|---|---|
| March equinox | March 20 |
| June solstice | June 21 |
| September equinox | September 22 |
| December solstice | December 21 |
Because the solstice is the astronomical start. If your calendar says June 1, set that date yourself and the page keeps the same look.
Not quite. It moves between June 20 and June 22 depending on the year and your time zone.
