There are two answers to when summer starts, and they are three weeks apart. ☀️ Meteorologists use June 1 because it makes the seasons tidy three month blocks. Astronomers use the solstice, around June 20 or 21. This page counts to the solstice.

The solstice is the longest day of the year in the northern half of the world. After that the light starts going back the other way, one minute at a time, like a tide turning while nobody is watching.

  • On the June solstice the sun sits directly over the Tropic of Cancer, its furthest point north.
  • Above the Arctic Circle the sun does not set that day at all.
  • South of the equator the same moment is the shortest day, so the countdown reads as winter arriving. 🏖️

Questions people ask

Why not count to June 1?

Because the solstice is the astronomical start. If your calendar says June 1, set that date yourself and the page keeps the same look.

Does the solstice always fall on the same day?

Not quite. It moves between June 20 and June 22 depending on the year and your time zone.
